NOTE: Before inquiring about possible museum acquisitions, please read the following Artifact Collecting Guidelines.
Artifact Collecting Guidelines
Consistent with the museum's mission statement, we collect and preserve the following:
1. Site-specific artifacts and such non-site-specific artifacts as are necessary to interpret the history of the site.
2. Special collections. The museum recognizes its professional obligation to maintain and enhance certain collections of special merit.
a) Selected du Pont family-related materials, particularly those associated with the family in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, or with those who played leading roles in the history of the DuPont Company in the twentieth century.
b) DuPont Company collections. As a repository for the original DuPont Company Museum collections (deposited 1954), the Hagley Museum and Library is a custodian of DuPont Company history. For artifacts not associated with the Hagley site, the museum collects selectively in those areas of Company history which are of significance in the larger scope of U.S. industrial and technological history with a special focus on consumer products.
c) Explosives collections based upon the strengths of the original DuPont Company Museum such as powder testers, powder containers, and blasting machines.
d) Patent models, and other selected models that illustrate themes of Hagley's mission statement, including:
- models that demonstrate principles and applications of particular technologies interpreted at Hagley Museum, such as waterpower and steam power;
- models that illustrate the development of commerce, such as salesman's samples
